A Brief History

The 609 family grew out of earlier British diode-bridge compressor designs developed for broadcast and recording use in the late 1960s and early 1970s. Reliable historical sources describe the compressor as a rackmount evolution of earlier console compressor and limiter modules, carrying forward the same diode-bridge approach that gave these designs their distinctive gain reduction character.

What made this topology so important was the way it balanced control with tone. Unlike some faster or cleaner compressor types, diode-bridge designs became known for their ability to round transients smoothly, add weight and polish, and hold mixes together without losing musicality. That is why they became favourites on stereo bus, mastering chains, vocals, and drums.
