The Vintage AX 1178 Compressor Emulations bring the unmistakable sound of a rare stereo FET compressor into Genesis with all the speed, grip, width, and attitude that made the original such a secret weapon. This is not a polite compressor. It is fast, assertive, and full of energy, with the ability to pin down transients, add urgency, and make sources leap forward in a mix.

Alongside the compression emulations, this pack also includes line box tone emulations of the signal path itself, giving you access to the vintage FET colour of the hardware even when you do not want active gain reduction.

The compressor emulations include:

The compressor emulations are calibrated with Red Drive at -24 for the intended threshold and envelope behaviour. The line box tone emulations are calibrated at unity for straightforward colour and drive shaping.

A Brief History

The original 1178 appeared at the end of the 1970s as a stereo development of the earlier FET compressor designs that had already become studio standards. Rather than simply duplicating two mono channels in practice, it gave engineers a dedicated stereo unit with fast response, tightly linked behaviour, and the same core FET-driven attitude that made its predecessors so desirable.

It earned respect in studios because it could do things that felt both precise and aggressive at the same time. Drums became tighter and more explosive, synth buses gained energy, guitars took on extra urgency, and stereo sources could be controlled without losing their sense of size. Over time, it became one of those under-discussed but deeply respected compressors that engineers kept around because almost nothing else moved quite as fast or hit quite as hard.

That combination of speed, edge, and stereo authority is exactly why the 1178 remains such a sought-after circuit today.

Click CAL to ensure the input is calibrated correctly in Genesis. Start with the Red Drive at the 12 o'clock position, then set it back to -24 for the intended compressor response. Dial it back for less compression or increase it for more compression and character.
