The compressor models deliver the classic wide knee behaviour where compression begins gently below the threshold and increases progressively as level rises. The line stages allow you to inject the unmistakable VCA console tone even when you do not want gain reduction making this pack far more flexible than a traditional compressor emulation.
🧬 A Brief History
When the original VCA bus compressor appeared in large format consoles it quietly changed mixing forever. Engineers discovered that placing it across a drum bus or mix bus at low ratios with gentle gain reduction could make everything feel tighter more controlled and more musical without sounding compressed.
Funky Junk took this legendary topology and faithfully reproduced the nuanced response that made the original so special. The key was the wide knee behaviour at low ratios where compression starts well before the threshold and gradually increases in intensity. This design allowed engineers to shape dynamics in a musical way rather than forcing control abruptly.
This approach became synonymous with professional mixing and is now considered one of the most important dynamics designs ever created.
